Enhanced Recovery After Surgery
My evidence-based ERAS pathway helps patients recover faster — with 88.1% discharged safely by day 3 under structured follow-up and clear home guidance.

What is ERAS?
Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) is a comprehensive care pathway I apply to cardiac surgery — challenging traditional practices in favour of what evidence shows works best.
ERAS covers pre-operative optimisation, refined anaesthesia, early extubation, early mobilisation, early oral intake, and structured discharge planning — coordinated by a dedicated team.
In my practice, 88.1% of ERAS pathway patients are discharged by day 3, with less pain, shorter hospital stays, and faster return to normal life — without compromising safety.
The ERAS difference
Early discharge by day 3
88.1% of my ERAS patients are discharged by day 3 with structured follow-up and home guidance.
Less pain & nausea
Multimodal pain management reduces opioid use and side effects.
Faster return to function
Early mobilisation and nutrition accelerate physical recovery.
Better patient experience
Clear expectations, family involvement, and coordinated care reduce anxiety.
Who can follow the ERAS pathway?
Most elective cardiac surgery patients are candidates. Emergency cases and complex redo operations may follow modified protocols.
You may be a candidate if
- Elective CABG, valve, or aortic surgery
- Medically optimised before surgery
- Motivated to participate in early mobilisation
- Adequate home support after discharge
- No contraindications to early extubation or oral intake
The ERAS pathway
ERAS begins weeks before surgery and continues through discharge and follow-up.
- 1
Pre-operative optimisation
Nutrition assessment, smoking cessation, medication review, and patient education before admission.
- 2
Day of surgery
Carbohydrate loading, short fasting, and goal-directed fluid management. Refined anaesthetic technique.
- 3
Immediate post-operative
Early extubation, pain control without heavy opioids, and sitting out of bed within hours when safe.
- 4
Discharge & follow-up
Structured criteria for discharge. Phone follow-up and early outpatient review.
Recovery on the ERAS pathway
Surgery completed. Extubation within hours. Sitting in chair same day.
Walking in corridor. Normal diet. Transition from ICU to ward.
Discharge home for many patients. Cardiac rehabilitation referral.
Outpatient follow-up. Progressive return to all activities.
Tips for recovery
- Follow pre-operative instructions precisely — they directly impact recovery speed.
- Mobilise as encouraged by your team — early movement prevents complications.
- Keep your discharge follow-up appointment — it is part of the ERAS safety net.
